When red-headed Justin Hromek was asked how he liked the color coordination of his new green champion's blazer emblematic of his victory in the $250,000 BPAA U.S. Open, he replied, "Red and green - it feels a little bit like Christmas!"Leading qualifier Hromek, Andover, Kan., was still beaming two hours later in the VIP lounge at host Bowl One Lanes in Troy, Mich. after turning back fourth-seeded Parker Bohn III, 267-230, for his second PBA crown and $46,000 first prize. An added bonus was in learning this "major" and his first singles title also carried a three-year exemption to the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions. "I was comfortable today and had a perfect ball reaction," Hromek said. "Winning the Touring Pro/Senior Doubles (in 1992) with Dick Weber was great, but I finally proved to myself I can win all by myself." Bohn had gained momentum in winning three earlier games and doubled to start the title game, which he led by 12 pins after three frames. Hromek then went to work and finished with nine strikes while Bohn could only keep pace through the seventh frame. A nine-time champ, Bohn, Jackson, N.J., was looking for his first "major," but had to settle for the $24,000 second-place check. Bohn started the afternoon by closing with six strikes to come from behind against fifth-seeded Jess Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., 219-179. He next defeated newly-elected PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss of Atlanta, who was making a third consecutive championship round appearance, 192-180. Bohn then seemed to find the lanes more to his liking against second-seeded Eric Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., who bowed, 228-202. Forkel collected $14,000 for third place, Voss earned $10,500 for fourth and Stayrook $8,500. The 240-man U.S. Open field was made up of 144 PBA players from the point list and 96 BPAA league bowler qualifiers.
