Monacelli Breaks Winless Drought
Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli waited more than 16 months before finally winning again, and it took a two-frame roll-off to earn his 14th PBA title in the $140,000 Leisure's Long Island Open at Sayville Bowl. Leading qualifier Monacelli proved to be the only player capable of stopping non-winner and fourth-seeded Steve Wilson, 40-39, after they had tied at 217 in regulation. Wilson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was impressive in his four-game run and proved equal to the pressure of facing two-time PBA Player of the Year Monacelli. Wilson trailed from the third frame and came back to strike out in the loth frame to force the roll-off. In overtime, Monacelli was first up and spared, while Wilson came back with a strike, nine-spare and nine. Monacelli then answered with a strike and eight-spare to edge Wilson for the $24,000 first prize. Both players were victimized with five single-pin leaves while pounding the 1-0 pocket in the title game. Wilson averaged better than 230 in just his second championship round appearance. Wilson's momentum began against Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., who also is still looking for his first title after being dumped, 256-173. Next up was 511-year-old Hall of Famer Nelson "Bo" Burton Jr., who bowed, 246-218, in his first national tour TV finals appearance on the lanes (not behind the ABC-TV microphone) in 10 years. Against second-seeded Ballard, Wilson gave the 12-time PBA champ the opportunity to collect a third Long Island Open crown when he opened in his 10th frame. Ballard could have advanced with a double. He struck with his first shot, but left the 2-8 on his second ball to fall short, 203-202. Wilson earned $13,000 as runnerup, Ballard made $8,500 for third, Burton $6,000 and Oakes $5,000.
