Duke Doubles With Choice Hotels Classic Win
Norm Duke became the PBA Tour's first double winner of 1994 after just four tournaments when he captured the $250,000 Choice Hotels Classic at Boulevard Bowl. But Duke couldn't hold off 1993 Senior Tour point leader Gary Dickinson, who toppled the newly crowned tournament champion in claiming the $25,000 winner-take-all Choice Challenge. The all-Edmond, Okla., final match guaranteed the big money would remain local after Duke pocketed the tournament's $38,000 first prize. Duke dramatically claimed his third-seeded berth in the ABC Sports' finals via a perfect game in pre-telecastqualifying, and then upset leading qualifier and reigning PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., 226-213,for his sixth PBA title. William$ opened with a turkey and then missed a 10-pin in his fourth frame, while Duke started with a four-bagger. Williams came back with a strike and the two traded spares until Duke closed him out with a strike, spare, strike in his ninth and 10th frames. In addition to his first-place check Duke also received a week's paid vacation for two to the Comfort Inn-Kensington in London, England, courtesy of Choice Hotels. Williams received $20,000 as runnerup. Duke seemed to lose his momentum for the Choice Challenge match against Dickinson, who survived the opening game of the broadcast with a 184-164 triumph versus Senior Tour challenger Ron Winger of North Hollywood, Calif. Against Duke, Dickinson struggled with just one strike and back-to-back opens through seven frames before striking again. By then, the PBA Hall of Famer and reigning PBA Senior Player of the year was well ahead, and closed with seven strikes for his 269-191 victory. Prior to ABC-TV's airing, the top five Senior Tour point leaders had earned invites to Edmond, and Winger went through, in order, past PBA Senior Players of the Year John Hricsina (1990), 214-196; John Handegard (1991),266-216; and Gem Stus (1992), 269-234, before being stopped by Dickinson, who additionally pocketed $7,500 as the top Senior Tour qualifier. Winger picked up $5,000, while Stus, Troy, Mich., Handegard, of Las Vegas, and Hricsina, Franklin, Pa., earned $2,500 each. Also prior to air, amateur Chris Barnes of Wichita, Kan., defeated Ted Hannahs, 216-194, before Duke unleashed his 300 game against the Wichita State collegiate bowler's 190 effort. Duke then opened his 7V appearance by edging Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas, 211-206. Williams banked $11,000 for third place, Barnes made $8,000 for fourth and Hannahs, Zanesville, Ohio, $6,500.
