"I guess I'm going fishin' now!" Dave Husted exclaimed after capturing his eighth PBA title at the $250,000 Brunswick Memorial World Open at Brunswick Deer Park Lanes. The fifth-seeded Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., powered past four opponents, including leading qualifier Brian Voss of Boca Raton, Fla.,191-183, in pocketing the $46,440 first prize and a 14-foot jet-propelled Bayliner "Jazz" sport boat, motor and trailer package. He also earned a three-year exemption into the General Tire Tournament of Champions with the third "major" PBA triumph of his career. The tense championship game started slowly, with both players appearing cautious with their deliveries. Voss started with a strike, two spares and a double, while Husted spared, doubled and then opened in his fourth frame. Voss cited a 4-pin leave in his sixth frame as critical, though Husted really didn't capitalize until the ninth frame, when he struck and Voss left a 3-10 split to allow Husted to clinch with a spare and two-pin count. Perhaps the biggest winner was the Lambs, Inc., charity of Libertyville, III., which profited by $25,000 from a pledge by Brunswick Corp. The ESPN telecast began with Husted defeating Rich Wolfe of Arlington, Va., 225-210. He then ousted first-time finalist Jeff Germann of Wheeling, W. Va., 216-177, and Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, 209-196, in the semifinal game.
