PBA's 1993 Summer Tour ended much as it began (at San Antonio) - with Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the winner's circle following the singles national tournament. Williams ran off with his seventh title of the year in the $125,000 Paula Carter's Homestead Classic when he defeated second-seeded Joe Firpo, 248-215, at host Paula Carter's Pro Bowl for the $18,000 first prize. Leading qualifier for a third consecutive week, Williams, Stockton, Calif., opened with five strikes, as he did one week earlier when he was victimized by a 299 game as the top seed. Firpo, of nearby Lake Worth, Fla., opened in his first frame, then added a four-bagger. After Firpo opened again in the eighth frame with an 8-10 split, William's sites were set on Mark Roth's PBA record eight victories of 1978. Williams joins PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony as the only player to have collected seven championships in one year. The opening game of the ESPN-televised finals saw Philip Ringener of Big Spring, Texas, downing David Ozio, Vidor, Texas, 245-204. Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., then entered and sidelined Ringener, 213-199, before falling to Firpo, 234-227. This tournament marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's devastation, which leveled Paula Carter's Pro Bowl and much of the surrounding area last year. The center re-opened for business June 1, less than 12 weeks prior to hosting the Tour's second visit there.
