Brian Davis made PBA history by winning the first national tournament he entered as he downed Walter Ray Williams Jr., 299-267, in the $130,000 Greater Harrisburg Open here at ABC West Lanes. Only a 2-pin denied the 21-year old another PBA record. Davis earned $20,000 for the victory. Davis joined PBA Hall of Famer Mike McGrath as the only PBA member to win his first time at the starting gate. McGrath captured the 1965 Portland Open in his first PBA tournament. In a TV finals emblematic of the week, Davis, Casselberry, Fla., nearly provided the sold-out crowd with the 21st 300 game. Williams Jr., the PBA's leading money winner with $241,310, rolled to a PBA record four perfectos, while Davis thrilled the crowd with back-to-back 300s during the final match play round. The 20 perfect games broke the previous record set at Beaumont in 1991. In the opening match of the ESPN-televised finals, David Traber, Woodstock, III., defeated 1989 PBA Rookie of the Year Steve Hoskins, Tarpon Springs, Fla., 249-246. Traber clossed with a seven-bagger for the come-from-behind victory. The defending champion Bob Vespi, Coral Springs, Fla., went down to defeat to Davis, 258-245. Vespi tried to psyche the young player when he recorded six consecutive strikes through the ninth frame, but Davis was equal to the task as he closed with five strikes of his own.
