The Walter Ray Williams Jr. Express rolled through Spectrum Lanes and when the smoke cleared, the PBA Tour's most dominant player of '93 emerged with his sixth title of the year in the $125,000 Greater Grand Rapids Open. Williams, Stockton, Calif., successful defended his leading qualifier position by turning back third-seeded Bob Learn Jr., 263-183, for his 12th PBA title and the 18,000 first prize. Williams opened with a double and then opened in the third frame before unleashing an eight-bagger to clinch the championship by the eighth frame. Learn, Erie, Pa., appeared lined up for the title game after disposing of Detroit's Harry Sullins, 238-214, in the seminal. Learn collected $9,500 as runner-up. "It's been a great week from the start of the tournament", Williams said. "I figured tougher lanes might be to my advantage and the others weren't playing the same angle I was. There wasn't a lot of oil to continue playing inside, so I stopped practicing where I wanted to play before we went on the air. In the opening game of the ESPN-televised finals, Mike Shady defeated Robert Lawrence of Austin, Texas, 217-202, and then Learn entered and sidelined Shady, Ripon, Wis., 214-153. Sullins earned $7,000 for third place, Shady collected $5,500 for fourth and Lawrence $4,500.
