Steve Jaros's "End of the Trail" trophy from 1991 now has a mate after he claimed the $250,000 Choice Hotels Summer Classic at Boulevard Bowl. Jaros, Bolingbrook, III., came from behind to edge leading qualifier Kevin McGerr, 49-36, after they had tied at 224 in the championship game. However, Jaros couldn't hold off PBA Senior Player of the Year Gene Stus in the $25,000 "winner-take-all" Choice Challenge match immediately following, as Stus closed with four strikes to win, 225-214. Jaros earned $38,000 for the tournament title, which was his second PBA crown, also won at host Boulevard Bowl. As a bonus, sponsor Choice Hotels provided Jaros with a seven-night, expense-paid vacation package to the Quality Inn-Atlantic Beach Resort in the Grand Bahamas. McGerr, Lincoln, Neb., led by 31 pins after seven frames, but Jaros closed with five strikes. Still, McGerr could have clinched his first PBA national tour title with a spare after striking on his first ball in the 10th frame. But the 1992 Quality Inn National Resident Pro Championship winner left the 2-4-8-10 split on his next shot and the tournament was forced into a two-frame rolloff. Jaros started the overtime with a strike and McGerr spared, six-spare, and struck to allow Jaros the victory with his strike, nine and spare. McGerr earned $20,000 as runner-up. This tournament concluded ABC Sports' 1993 PBA coverage, and the unique format included five games bowled prior to going on the air. PBA's five Senior Tour point leaders earned invitations to the event, with point leader John Handegard the only senior guaranteed a berth on the telecast. Fifth-place qualifier and PBA Hall of Famer Don Johnson defeated hometown favorite Gary Dickinson, 174-162, and then fell to Stus, 202-168. Stus then turned back second-place point qualifier John Hricsina, 215-182, to earn his spot opposite 1991 Senior Player of the Year Handegard.
