It was an afternoon of perfection for PBA President Mike Aulby, who became just the sixth player in PBA national tour history to shoot a 300 game en route to winning the $140,000 Wichita Open. Aulby, Indianapolis, needed the first strike in the 10th frame in order to win after David Ozio sat down in the title game with a 279. Ozio's lone miscue was an eighth frame spare, and their 579 pinfall total represented the highest-scoring televised finals game in PBA history. After gaining the clinching strike, Aulby seemed to relax and calmly stroked two more strikes as the Wichita crowd exploded, and Ozio met Aulby's return from his 12th shot with an animated "high five." In ABC-TV's opening game, '91 PBA Rookie of the Year Ricky Ward swarmed Bryan Goebel of Merriam, Kan., when he opened with six strikes en route to a 279-200 win. Ozio then defeated Ward, N. Fort Myers, Fla., 236-195, and first-time finalist Kirk Von Krueger in a come-from-behind effort, 239-214. Von Krueger, Pensacola, Fla., his wife Mary and their three sons quickly stole the hearts of the Northrock Lanes audience, but he had to settle for the $7,500 third-place check. Ozio, Vidor, Texas, earned $12,000 as runnerup, Ward collected $6,000 for fourth and Goebel $5,000.
