Second-seeded Bob Benoit welcomed his second opportunity for a championship at host Bowl El Paso, and took full advantage in upsetting leading qualifier Robert Lawrence, 216-191, for the $130,000 El Paso Open crown. Benoit, Topeka, Kan., had bowed to 1991 El Paso victor Ray Edwards, but redeemed himself with the '93 tournament's $20,000 first prize for his fourth PBA title. Both finalists started the championship game somewhat tentatively and were tied through three frames when Lawrence converted the difficult 2-10 split. Benoit then started a four-bagger in the fifth frame, but opened the door for Lawrence when he missed a 10-pin in his ninth frame. Lawrence couldn't take advantage of this opportunity on the challenging lane condition and thus picked up the $10,500 second-place check. In the opening game of the ABC Sports' telecast, fourth-seeded Gary Schlucter, Fremont, Ohio, defeated Bob Spaulding of Harrisburg, Pa., 190-183. Third-seeded Mike Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., then sent Schlucter to the sidelines, 221-176. In the semifinal game, Benoit came out on top against Miller, 203-184. Miller earned $7,000 for third place, Schlucter took home $5,500 for his first championship round appearance and Spaulding collected $4,500 for fifth.
