Walter Ray Williams Jr. finished with seven strikes, including three game winners in the 10th, to earn his third title of the year at Celebrity Bowl. In the PBA's first visit to eastern Washington's tri-cities area, Williams defeated Bryan Goebel of Merriam, Kan., 258-254, in the championship match of the $125,000 Northwest Classic. Making his career-high ninth championship round appearance of the year, the top-seeded Williams needed all his skill and a couple of breaks to come from behind for his ninth PBA title. In what would end up being one of the closest title matches of the year, Goebel started a string of six strikes in the third and finished it when he tripped a 2-pin in the eighth. The 31-year-old Kansan got the first two strikes in the 10th and could have forced Williams to strike out for a tie, but left a 3-4-6-7. Needing two strikes and a seven-count to win, Williams topped that by rolling three in a row to capture his second title in four weeks. Williams won in Erie, Pa., in March and added another title in San Antonio in May. In the first game of the locally-televised event, Randy Pedersen of Hollywood, Fla., defeated Dave Arnold of Gilbert, Ariz., 259-216, before falling to Norm Duke of Oklahoma City, 278-226. Duke then lost to Goebel in the semifinal, 236-201. Duke earned $7,000 for third placed while Pedersen picked up $5,500 for fourth and Arnold garnered $4,5000 for fifth.
