Randy Pedersen Ends Victory Drought

Randy Pedersen of Hollywood, Fla., won for the first time in three years by downing David Ozio of Vidor, Texas, 207-184, in the title game of the $125,000 Billy Vukovich III Memorial Fresno Open at Cedar Lanes. Pedersen topped off the day by beating roommate George Branham III of Indianapolis, 184-183, in the "King of the Hill" match.

Pedersen, who led all but one round throughout the week, entered the stepladder finals as the top seed. He jumped on Ozio early, striking in four of the first five frames to take a 30-pin lead. Ozio then cut the lead to 20 through seven frames. Pedersen almost handed the match to Ozio when he failed to convert a 4-pin spare in the eighth frame. However, Ozio left the 4-6-7 split in the ninth frame which sealed the victory for Pedersen and the $18,000 first prize. It was Pedersen's ninth title and first since the 1990 Quaker State Open in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Branham, who finished fifth in the tournament, was making his first defense of the "King" crown. Pedersen held a comfortable lead through six frames. He then failed to mark in the seventh and ninth frames handing Branham a 10-pin lead heading into the 10th. Branham spared then got nine on his final ball, forcing Pedersen to strike out for the win. Pedersen stepped up and delivered three pocket strikes for the crown.

The opening game of the ABC telecast saw PBA Hall of Farrier Wayne Webb of Beaumont, Texas, defeat third-seeded Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan., 259-242. Benoit was making his first telecast of the year, but would have to settle for the $5,500 fourthplace check. Ozio then defeated Webb in the semifinal match, 207-204. Webb collected $7,000 for third while Ozio pocketed $9,500 for second.
