Walter Ray Williams Jr. finally broke through for the first time in 10 top-seeded attempts and won the $150,000 Columbia 300 Open at Astro Bowling Center. Williams, Stockton, Calif., defeated second-seeded Butch Soper, 279-222, and pocketed the $27,000 first prize for his second win of the year. Williams pushed his 1993 earnings total to $145,700, and the 1986 PBA Player of the Year convincingly leads nearly every PBA statistical category. Ironically, he never led this tournament at any point until the 48th (position round) game, when he wrested the leading qualifier spot from Soper via a 284-199 conquest. In the opening game of the ESPN championship round, Dave Traber of Woodstock, Ill., appeared well on the way toward his first national title after posting victories against fifth-seeded Amleto Monacelli, 269-224, and Eric Forkel, 237-212. Soper then came on and opened with seven strikes to gain another shot at the Columbia 300 Open title via his 268-198 win over Traber. Traber earned $8,000; Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., took home $6,000; and two-time PBA Player of the Year Monacelli, Venezuela, collected $5,000.
