Faced with his most challenging year on the PBA Tour since being named its Rookie of the Year in 1980, Pete Weber bounced back to capture his 20th title at the $200,000 IOF Foresters Bowling For Miracles Open at Club 300 Bowl. Leading qualifier Weber, St. Ann, Mo., defeated second-seeded Bob Vespi, 206-203, and then he and reigning "King of the Hill" Del Ballard Jr. entertained the Canadian crowd, with Ballard earning the $5,000 winner-take-all stakes by the score of 267-206. Weber ran his string of consecutive years with at least one PBA title to 10 after appearing m the championship round for his first time in 1993. He pocketed the $43,000 first prize and Vespi, Coral Springs, Fla., earned $22,500, and all positions remained as seeded. As the higher qualifier, Weber had opted to make Vespi finish the match, and closed with three strikes after leaving five 10pins on clear pocket hits during the course of his game. Vespi needed a strike on his first shot in the 10th frame to win his third PBA title, but left a 10-pin, which also was on a pocket hit. The IOF Foresters is a fraternal organization and was sponsoring its first PBA tournament, benefiting the Bowling for Miracles program. The afternoon began with IOF Foresters Bowling for Miracles spokesperson Mike Aulby defeating fellow lefthander Brad Snell, Elk Grove, Ill., 251-175. Vespi then came on and disposed of PBA President Aulby, 235-202, to gain his spot opposite Weber for the title.
