Ricky Ward Is The Word At Johnny Petraglia Open
In a memorable two-game appearance, Ricky Ward of N. Fort Myers, Fla., now owns his first PBA title and was crowned "King". Leading qualifier Ward fought off non-winner Kelly Coffman of Topeka. Kan., 239-213, to claim the $170,000 Johnny Petraglia Open at Caroller Lanes and then ousted Walter Ray Williams Jr., 279-268, in a thrilling strikefest to earn the "King of the Hill" distinction. The 1991 PBA Rookie of the Year, Ward earned $34,000 and qualified for the Tournament of Champions with his title. He also pocketed $5,000 in defeating 1986 PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. In the title game, Coffman started with three strikes, while Ward struck, spared, and then strung five in a row. Coffman opened in his sixth frame and never threatened thereafter, for which he received the $18,000 runnerup check. In the "King of the Hill" game, Williams, Stockton, Calif., failed to convert the 4-9 split in his opening frame, but then unleashed nine consecutive strikes. The poised Ward started with a six-bagger, spared, and then went off the sheet for his 279. Still, Williams could have tied Ward in his 10th frame, but his second shot left a ringing 10-pin to end his fortnight's reign as "King". Husted started the afternoon by ousting third-seeded Williams, 258-236, when another stubborn 10-pin denied Walter Ray the opportunity to at least force a roll off. Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., then bowed to Coffman, 233-232, when he opened in his 10th frame after needing only seven pins on his second shot to advance. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
