Walter Ray Williams Jr. Wins Flagship City Open
A third consecutive appearance among the championship round at Eastway Lanes proved the charm for Walter Ray Williams Jr., who captured the $150,000 Flagship City Open. Second-seeded Williams, Stockton, Calif., upset leading qualifier John Mazza, 211-179, to win his seventh PBA title and first in the U.S. since 1987. He then came from behind against reigning "royalty" Ron Williams (no relation), 214-193, to capture the "King of the Hill" match and collect the $30,000 tournament first prize plus the $5,000 "winner-take-all" stakes, which denied Ron Williams a $10,000 bonus for a third consecutive victory as "King". In the title game, Williams fell behind early as Mazza, Mount Clemens, Mich., opened with a double, but then fell intotrouble mid-game when he failed to convert two 2-7 splits. Williams stayed clean and when Mazza left the 7-10 splitin his ninth frame, Williams' victory was assured. Ironically, Mazza also was the victim of Williams' last PBA Tourtriumph, when he fell as the top seed in the 1991 Japan Cup at Tokyo. The 1986 PBA Player of the Year, Williamshad qualified for the championship round on his last two visits to Eastway Lanes, but couldn't capitalize on hisprevious opportunities. In the opening game of the ABC Sports' telecast, George Branham III defeated synthetic lanes specialist Del Ballard Jr., 258198. Walter Ray Williams then defeated Branham, Indianapolis, 246-184, to earn his spot opposite Mazza. Mazza collected $16,000 as runnerup, Branham earned $8,000 for third place and Ballard, Richardson, Texas, received $6,500. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
