King Williams Captures Cleveland Open

It was a temporary coup, but following a one-week absence Ron Williams was back on his throne, which he earned after winning the $135,000 Cleveland Open at Yorktown Lanes. Williams, Fort Worth, Texas, defeated newcomer Jeff D. Morin of Rockaway, N.J., 206-196, for his second title of the year and the $23,000 first prize before ousting "King" Bob Learn Jr., 235204, in a rematch of their pairing one week earlier, in which Learn topped Williams.

Second-seed Williams came on in the second game and stopped PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson, 246-238, before meeting leading qualifier Morin. Not only was Morin making his first appearance in the championship round, he-also collected his first PBA check of 12 tournament appearances for his $12,000 runnerup payday.

Williams started the championship game with a strike, opened in his second frame after chopping the 6-10, and then doubled to trail Morin by a pin. Morin was unable to strike again until the ninth frame and could have clinched with a 10th-frame double, but couldn't carry his first shot to allow Williams his opportunity for re-claiming his crown as "King."

In the King of the Hill match, both players opened with strikes and were tied after four frames, but then Williams strung a fivebagger and Learn couldn't match the pace to yield the $5,000 winner-take-all stakes.

The ABC Sports broadcast began with Dickinson, Edmond, Okla., turning back Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., 246-214. Dickinson was seeking has first title since 1983.
