John Mazza Wins True Value Open
"I'm back, I'm back!" John Mazza emotionally proclaimed as he closed out Norm Duke, 258-225, in winning the $210,000 True Value Open at Landmark Recreation Center. For Mazza, he proved to himself he's back where he belongs, on the PBA Tour, and now basking in the winner's circle after returning from a seven-month hiatus. Mazza, Mt. Clemens, Mich., claimed his fourth PBA title and pocketed the $42,000 first prize, which also re-qualified him for the Tournament of Champions. Immediately after his memorable triumph, left-handed Mazza gave reigning King of the Hill Ron Williams all he could handle. Williams remained atop "the hill" when he survived a two-frame roll-off, 40-39, after the two combatants had tied of 225. Leading qualifier Mazza started the championship game with a spare and turkey, while Duke, Oklahoma City, doubled, spared and then opened in his fourth frame, after which he never recovered. Mazza closed with six strikes and kept up a constant banter with the emotionally-charged crowd, who fueled his animation. The ABC Sports telecast began with Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., downing-PBA President Mike Aulby of Indianapolis in a thriller, 257-253. Duke then sidelined Westlake, 258-216, to gain his berth in the title game. Kicking off the True Value Open week was the third Kool Shootout of the year, in which Wayne Webb and Tom Baker defeated Randy Pedersen and Eric Forkel, 240-212. Webb/Baker shared the $8,000 winners' share and donated $500 to PBA's official charity, the Children's Miracle Network, while Pedersen/Forkel split $4,000. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
