PBA's reigning King of the Hill Ron Williams said, "If I just could've flip-flopped my games...": But that wasn't the case as Steve Hoskins defeated Williams, 245-235, to capture his first PBA title and the $200,000 Quaker State Open at Forum Bowling Lanes. The King of the Hill was a rematch of the tide game and the newly-crowned tournament champ could not topple King Williams, who collected a $10,000 bonus (plus the $5,000 one-game prize) for his third consecutive victory following his 246-179 win. Hoskins, Tarpon Springs, Fla., earned $41,000 for his triumph and also qualified for the Tournament of Champions. Voted PBA's Rookie of the Year in 1989, Hoskins opened the championship game with a turkey, back-to-back spares and then a four-bagger. Williams, of nearby Fort Worth, was the obvious crowd favorite and could have claimed the title in his 10th frame, but his first shot left the 3-6-10, relegating him to the $21,000 runnerup check. The 17th annual Quaker State Open on ABC Sports began with 1986 PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. (no relation to Ron) defeating Dave D'Entremont of Middleburg Hts., Ohio, 226-164. Ron Williams then turned back Walter Ray Williams Jr., Stockton, Calif., 247-203, to earn his spot opposite leading qualifier Hoskins. Hoskins immediately donated $500 of his first prize toward the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, which had benefitted by more than $200,000 since PBA first visited Forum Bowling Lanes and Grand Prairie 19 years earlier.
