Mike Aulby continued his winning ways at the Showboat Bowling Center when he earned his 21st PBA fide in the 34th annual $175,000 Showboat Invitational. Aulby, Indianapolis, defeated second-seeded Parker Bohn III, 203-180, to deny Bohn backto-back tournament crowns. Aulby captured his fifth championship the Showboats friendly confines, where he has claimed three Doubles Classic tithes with brother-in-law Steve Cook and the 1979 PBA National Championship, and pocketed the $35,000 first prize for his richest-yet win there. In fact, when Aulby bowed to Ron Williams, 216-190, for Williams' second consecutive win in the new King of the Hill concluding game, it was the first loss ever for Aulby in a televised match at the Showboat, spanning 14 years! PBA President Aulby now is tied with Marshall Holman at 21 wins, with only four players in PBA history claiming more titles. In the championship game, Aulby started with a four-bagger and led by 38 pins before opening in his fifth and seventh frames. Bohn failed to take advantage of the opportunities and never doubled, which ultimately denied him the chance for his 10th PBA title and a rematch against Williams. The ABC Sports telecast at PBA's oldest continuing sponsored tournament began with Hugh Miller defeating on-winner Andy Neuer of Milton, Pa., 182-176. Bohn then entered and dropped Miller, his doubles partner, 232-179, before facing Aulby. Bohn collected $18,000 as runnerup, Miller, Seattle, collected $10,000 for third place and Neuer $8,000.
