AC-Delco Classic

$200,000 AC-DELCO CLASSIC
Gable House Bowl, Torrance, Calif., Jan 5-9, 1993

Ron Williams Feels Like A King

Ron Williams again returned to the friendly confines of Gable House Bowl and came away with his third PBA title and requalified for the Tournament of Champions by capturing the $200,000 AC-Delco Classic. In kicking off the PBA's 1993 tournament tour, Williams also earned the inaugural "King of the Hill" distinction with his victory.

Williams, Fort Worth, Texas, defeated second-seeded Mark Williams (no relation) of Beaumont, Texas, 225-193, for the $42,000 first prize and guaranteed his appearance as "King of the Hill" opposite the Phoenix Open winner.

Ron Williams started the AC-Delco championship game with a double, spare and double to forge a 30-pin lead after five frames and closed with a turkey for his second AC-Delco title at Gable House (his last win also was earned in Torrance in 1990). Mark Williams suffered open fourth and eighth frames, which spelled his $22,000 runnerup payday.

The 1993 opening championship round started with Tony Westlake defeating first-time finalist Billy Orlikowski, Marne, Mich., 212-203, and then bettering roommate Dave Ferraro of Kingston, N.Y., 241-228. Mark Williams then stopped Westlake, Edmond, Okla., 212-187, to establish the "all Williams" final.

Westlake earned $13,000 for third place, Ferraro $10,000 for fourth and Orlikowski took home $8,000 for fifth. Ironically, there was no fifth-place finisher on air during the remainder of this past years Winter Tour with the advent of the "King of the Hill.
