Amleto Monacelli picked up his 13th PBA title at the $140,000 Taylor Lanes Open after he stopped fourth seeded Chris Warren of Dallas, 246-193. For his efforts, Monacelli collected the $23,000 first prize, his second title of the year and second win at Taylor Lanes. Warren opened with a triple, but relinquished the lead after opening in his fourth and sixth frames and Monacelli coasted home. Warren began the ESPN televised finals with a 225-213 conquest of 1986 PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., Stockton, Calif. A mental lapse and a 7-pin miss nearly pushed that game to a roll-off, had Williams struck out in his 10th frame. Warren then came from behind to edge Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 254-237, to deny Ferraro an unprecedented third Taylor Lanes title. In the semifinal game, Warren topped 1987 PBA Rookie of the Year Ryan Shafer of Elmira, N.Y., 206-188, to earn his place opposite Monacelli. Warren collected $12,000 as runnerup, Shafer earned $7,500, Ferraro $6,000 for fourth and Williams $5,000.
