PBA President Marc McDowell walked off with his fifth PBA title and third win of the year in the $140,000 Rochester Open. Leading qualifier McDowell, the youngest President in PBA History, defeated Randy Pederson, 267-215, for the $23,000 first prize. McDowell spared to open the championship game, then reeled off seven consecutive strikes and never looked back. In the opening game of the ESPN telecast, Pederson sidelined 1986 PBA Player of the Year, Walter Ray Williams Jr., 225-203. Next up was two-time PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli falling to Pederson, 237-197. In the semifinal game, Pederson defeated the only non-champion among the field, Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., 225-182. Pederson collected $12,000 as runnerup and pushed his career record in TV finals to an impressive 23-8. Oakes earned $7,500 for third place, Monacelli $6,000 for fourth and Williams $5,000.
