Bob Vespi defeated Jim Pencak, 279-205, to win the Inaugural ABC West Lanes Open and the $18,000 first prize. Vespi started with eight consecutive strikes to coast to his first victory from the top-seeded position and his second PBA title. The evening began with first-time finalist Mark Bradley, Akron, Ohio, losing to two-time PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli, 233-183. Monacelli, Barquisimeto, Venezuela, then eliminated Greg Kemp, Bryan, Texas, 193-169. Kemp, the 1991 Southwestern Region Player of the Year, also was competing in his first PBA championship round. Then veteran Jim Pencak, Mayfield Hts., Ohio, stepped in and disposed of Monacelli, 210-204. Pencak, who earlier had recorded 16 consecutive championship round wins, advanced to the championship game to face Vespi. Pencak opened in the first frame by missing the 7-pin. The match was almost out of reach after Pencak opened in the second and didn't strike in the championship game until the fourth frame. Pencak trailed by 63 pins after four frames and the only question remaining was whether Vespi would shoot 300.
