Green Bay Classic

$125,000 GREEN BAY CLASSIC
Red Carpet Lanes, Green Bay, Wis., Aug 9-13, 1992

Aulby Joins Select Company With Win 20

Mike Aulby became just the seventh player in PBA history to have collected 20 PBA titles with his 289-172 victory against Bill Oakes in the $125,000 Green Bay Classic at Red Carpet Lanes. Leading qualifier Aulby, Indianapolis, opened the championship game with 10 consecutive strikes and took home the $18,000 first prize though denied a potential $60,000 bonus if he had recorded a 300 game.

Oakes, Lawton, Okla., advanced from the fifth-seeded position and was bowling for his first PBA title and qualification into the Firestone Tournament of Champions. The seven-year pro had dramatically qualified among the final five with crucial 10th frame strikes in the position round game the night before. He continued his clutch shooting display throughout the evening, but against Aulby it wouldn't have mattered.

Oakes began the ESPN-televised finals with a 257-255 squeaker against the Tour's yearly earnings leader, Eric Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif. Oakes then continued with 10th frame pressure strikes to defeat defending Green Bay champion Tony Westlake of Edmond, Okla., 238-229, and the 1988 PBA Rookie of the Year Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., in the semifinal, 237-202.

Immediately following the first round of match play at Green Bay, the 14th KOOL Shootout of the year was contested, with the doubles team of David Ozio and Wayne Webb facing off against Amleto Monacelli and Dave Ferraro. Team Monacelli/Ferraro defeated Ozio/Webb 248-233.
