When the dust settled after four games and 90 minutes of the $135,000 Columbia 300 Open at Astro Bowling Center, the names remained in the same positions as they qualified. Roger Bowker of Ocala, Fla., defeated second-seeded roommate and best friend Butch Soper, 228-208, for his third PBA title, $21,000 first prize and re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Soper opened the championship game with a 4-9 split he failed to convert, then tacked on a turkey, while Bowker started with a four-bagger and never trailed. In the opening game of the ESPN-televised finals, Ron Palombi Jr. defeated fifth-seeded Scott Devers of Richmond, Ind., 236-179. Rookie of the Year contender Jason Couch then entered and ousted Palombi, Erie, Pa., 223-220, when Palombi failed to strike out in the 10th frame. In the semifinal game, Soper disposed of Couch, Winter Garden, Fla., 224-204. Soper earned $12,000 for second place, Couch took home $7,000 for third, Palombi $6,000 for fourth and Devers $5,000. Following the first evening of match play, the 12th KOOL Shootout of the year was contested, featuring Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., and Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas. Husted ran away from Lawrence, 234-166.
