Two-time PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli proved himself equal to the (Choice) Challenge by collecting his 12th PBA title in the $225,000 Choice Hotels Summer Classic at Boulevard Bowl. Monacelli, Venezuela, earned the tournament's $38,000 first prize by defeating leading qualifier Pete Weber, 241-212. Immediately following the championship game, Monacelli added another $25,000 to his bankroll via a 233-198 conquest of PBA Senior Tour point leader Gene Stus in a unique "winner take all" match. Both tournament finalists opened the championship game with turkeys, but after sparing, Monacelli added a five-bagger, while Weber spared, opened, and a closing triple simply came too late to help. Weber settled for the $20,000 second prize. Monacelli began the afternoon facing fifth-seeded Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas, in an off-camera blowout game, 269-192. Monacelli next turned back the Tour's hottest bowler, Norm Duke of Oklahoma City, appearing in his third consecutive final and fourth of the last five tournaments bowled, 219-199. Monacelli then defeated second-seeded Ray Edwards, Centereach, N.Y., 205-183, to earn his spot against Weber.
