The man called "The Bowling Buddha" by his fellow professional bowlers, Del Ballard Jr., broke the PBA Tour's top-seeded hex with a 256-204 triumph over Mark Thayer in the $130,000 Oregon PBA Open at Hollywood Bowl. Ballard, Richardson, Texas, was the first leading qualifier (and fourth of the year) to successfully defend his position since February on the Tour. He collected his 11th PBA title and second of the year, as well as the $20,000 winner's check. Ballard opened the title match with a triple, spared, and then tripled again, while Thayer counted two lone strikes in his first six frames, after which he trailed by 42 pins and never recovered. The ABC Sports telecast began with Thayer, Lafayette, Ind., defeating Jeff Bellinger, Columbia, S.C., 258206, and then 1991 Oregon Open runnerup Norm Duke, Albuquerque, N.M., 254-246. In the semifinal game, Thayer topped second-seeded Bob Benoit, Topeka, Kan., 244-183. Thayer collected $10,500, Benoit earned $7,000, Duke took home $5,500 and Bellinger $4,500.
