The Sun Shines On Warren In Florida

"I may be small, but dynamite comes in little packages," Chris Warren said, upon winning his fifth PBA title at the $135,000 Florida Open at Cypress Lanes. Warren, Dallas, pocketed the $23,000 first prize by defeating leading qualifier Bob Vespi, 211-208, who was frustrated with a second runnerup finish in two months.

Trailing by three pins after eight frames, Vespi, Plantation, Fla., finished with four clutch strikes, which forced Warren to double and tally eight pins in his 10th frame to grab the title. He was equal to the task.

The animated Warren talked his way through four games and reminded the frustrated Vespi it took him 13 trips to the championship round before breaking into the winner's circle.

Warren opened with a 221-219 come-from-behind victory against first-time finalist Greg Thomas of Old Town, Idaho, and then defeated Showboat Invitational champion Harry Sullins, 217-203. In the Semifinal game, Warren had an easier time against his best friend and roommate Mark Thayer, 206-172. Vespi collected $12,000, Thayer earned $7,500 for third place, Sullins, $6,000 for fourth and Thomas cashed for $5,000.

In the third KOOL "Shootout" of the year, 1991 Florida Open champ John Mazza defeated Nelson "Bo" Burton Jr., 204-188.
