Bruce Hamilton emerged on top in a battle between two of professional bowling's top mental game practitioners to win the $200,000 True Value Open at Landmark Recreation Center. Leading qualifier Hamilton, Seattle, Wash., defeated defending champion Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 224-180, to earn the $40,000 top prize and his first PBA title, which qualified him for the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Appearing in his first championship round finals, Hamilton's tentativeness was apparent when he opened with the 7-10 leave, but then tripled and opened again in his fifth frame to trail Monacelli by one pin. Monacelli started the title game with a double, but then faced his own troubles with open fourth and seventh frames. Hamilton closed strongly with five strikes to clinch, before even giving Monacelli an opportunity to win in his 10th frame. The ABC Sports televised finals began with five more new faces among the 1992 championship round finalists, for a total of 30 different individuals represented to date without duplication. Dave Arnold defeated Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 248-186, and then Pete McCordic turned back Arnold, Mesa, Ariz., 215-177. Monacelli then entered and topped McCordic, Katy, Texas, 247-223, to establish the championship pairing. | Pos. | | Name, City/State | Total | Amount | | | 1 | | Bruce Hamilton, Seattle, Wash. | 224 (1 game) | $40,000 | | 2 | | Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela | 427 (2 games) | 22,000 | | 3 | | Pete McCordic, Katy, Texas | 438 (2 games) | 12,500 | | 4 | | Dave Arnold, Mesa, Ariz. | 425 (2 games) | 10,000 | | 5 | | Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y. | 186 (1 game) | 7,500 | |
