First-time finalist Alan Bishop of Louisville, Ky., proved to be "one tough champion" in winning the $175,000 Quaker State Open at Forum Bowling Lanes. Bishop upset leading qualifier Jess Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., 223-190, for the $36,000 first prize and a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions, which accompanies his first PBA title. A four-bagger in the fifth frame of the championship game provided breathing room for Bishop in the tight match, and Stayrook settled for the $19,000 second-place check. In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised championship round, another first-time finalist, Derek Williams of Beaumont, Texas, topped Steve Hardy of Nashua, N.H., 203-163. Williams is the younger brother of six-time PBA champ Mark Williams. Bishop knocked off Williams in the next game, 200-173, with the help of a fifth frame conversion of the 4-6-7-8-10 "Greek Church" split. Williams earned $9,000 for fourth place. In the semifinal game, Bishop defeated PBA "rookie" Jason Couch of Winter Garden, Fla., 215-201. Couch also was appearing in his first television finals and earned $11,000 for third place.
