When the smoke had cleared at Brunswick Deer Park Lanes, it was "just Jess" (Stayrook) atop the 240-man field at the 20th Brunswick Memorial World Open. Stayrook, San Diego, upended leading qualifier Ron Palombi Jr., 234-215, to claim the $34,120 first prize and a Bayliner 1700 Capri Bowrider boat, motor and trailer package, which accompanied his third PBA title. Palombi opened the final game with a three-bagger to grab an early lead, but Stayrook then unleashed his five-bagger and Palombi never again doubled. In the opening game of the NBC-TV broadcast, Harry Sullins defeated three-time 1991 champion David Ozio of Vidor, Texas, 237-204. Sullins then turned back another three-time '91 winner, Del Ballard Jr., Richardson, Texas, 226-205. Stayrook then ended the day for Detroit's Sullins, 206-175. Palombi pocketed $18,120 as runner-up, Sullins earned $10,120, Ballard $8,120 for fourth place and Ozio received $7,120.
