Walter Ray Williams Jr. had to travel 8,000 miles to finally break a winless drought, which had stretched more than four years with his victory in the Oronamin C Japan Cup at Tokyo Port Bowl. Williams, Stockton, Calif., upset leading qualifier John Mazza, 211-189, for the $18,500 first prize and frustrated Mazza with a second consecutive runner-up finish. The lead see-sawed throughout the championship match and was deadlocked after six frames. Williams added a triple starting in his eighth frame, and Mazza could only answer with a ninth-frame strike to fall short. In the opening game of the five-match championship round, David Ozio, Vidor, Texas, topped Norm Duke, Albuquerque, N.M., 226-215, and then Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas, 208-182. Ozio's momentum continued against PBA President Marc McDowell, Madison, Wis., 236-200, and it looked as though Ozio could become the Tour's first four-time winner of the year. In the semifinal game, 1986 PBA Player of the Year Williams closed with six strikes to defeat Ozio, 237-223, who was looking for his fourth title of 1991.
