Second-seeded Tony Westlake calmed a large partisan crowd in defeating leading qualifier Marc McDowell of Madison, Wis., 197-183, to win the $130,000 LaMode Classic at Red Carpet Lanes. For Westlake, Edmond, Okla., his fourth PBA title and second of the year was worth $20,000. Westlake opened the championship game with a double, then left the 4-7-10 split, which he failed to convert. McDowell was struggling in finding the pocket throughout the match and a second-frame conversion of the 2-4-10 split buoyed him to an one-pin lead in the fourth frame after doubling. Westlake nursed a slight lead into the closing games, and when he failed to convert the 5-7 split in his ninth, McDowell needed to double to close him out. With the pressure of the local supporters looking on, he left the 2-4-10 split and his seemingly perfect conversion shot missed by a whisker. In the first game of the ESPN-broadcast finals, PBA Tour rookie Dave Wodka, Las Vegas, prolonged Dave Ferraro's championship round woes, 176-175. Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., appeared a certain winner, but left the 1-2-4-6-10 washout in his 10th frame when he needed just a spare to advance. Ferraro now is 0-10 since winning the 1990 Firestone Tournament of Champions. Next up was Jim Pencak of Mayfield Hts., Ohio, who extended his PBA record consecutive singles wins in the TV finals to 16 by ousting Wodka, 210-162. Red Carpet Lanes-Green Bay is the site of Pencak's first PBA title and where his string began, but it was his first victim, Westlake, who ended his run, 223-195. Pencak earned $7,000 for third place.
