Competing in his first championship round since January, Brian Voss upended leading qualifier Scott Devers in the $135,000 Columbia 300 Open at Highland Lanes. Voss advanced from the second-seeded position and defeated Devers, 238-212, for his 11th PBA title. Voss, Boca Raton, Fla., trailed early in the title match. Devers, Richmond, Ind., opened with three consecutive strikes, taking a 19-pin lead through three frames. Devers then spared in the fourth frame but failed to mark in the fifth frame when he chopped the 2-4-7 spare. Voss took the lead for good when he rolled four consecutive strikes beginning in his fourth frame. The championship round, which was televised by ESPN, began with Joe Firpo, Lake Worth, Fla., tripping Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 235-173. Tony Westlake of Edmond, Okla., who was looking for his second title in five weeks, disposed of Firpo, 185-175. Voss then entered and threw a crucial double in his ninth and 10th frames to defeat Westlake, 209-199, and advance to the championship game.
