Bryan Goebel took advantage of opportunities and won his second PBA title by upending leading qualifier Mark Williams, 224-195, in the $145,000 Kessler Classic at Active West Town Square Lanes. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., also re-qualified for the 1992 $300,000 Firestone Tournament of Champions with his victory, and earned the $24,000 first prize and impressive trophy. Both players opened with strikes in the championship game, and both followed with spares. Williams, Beaumont, Texas, struck again in his fourth frame, spared and then opened by taking the 2-pin off the 2-8 leave in his sixth frame. Goebel came back with a double, spared in his fifth frame and then tripled with the benefit of two "Brooklyn" carries to put matters out of reach. In the opening game of ESPN's first national tour telecast of 1991, Marshall Holman survived against Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 222-219, when Bohn crushed the lefthander's 1-2 pocket, only to leave a solid 10-pin still upright. Holman then sidelined John Mazza, Mt. Clemens, Mich., 224-217, who was shooting for consecutive wins after claiming the previous week's Fresno Open. In the semifinal game, Goebel entered and defeated PBA's career earnings leader Holman, Medford, Ore., 222-199. Bohn picked up $5,000 for fifth place, Mazza earned $6,000 for fourth, Holman $8,000 for third and runner-up Williams received $13,000.
