Amleto Monacelli quietly pursued the paces toward claiming a third consecutive PBA Player of the Year award, after winning the $200,000 True Value Open at Landmark Recreation Center. Leading qualifier Monacelli turned back third-seeded Kelly Coffman, 225-180, for his 11th PBA title and the $39,000. Coffman immediately dug a hole for himself by opening in his first two frames, while Monacelli doubled and continued to extend his lead from that point. It was the third appearance in a championship round for Coffman, Topeka, Kan., who earned $20,000 as runner-up. Coffman had to oust his roommate and the reigning PBA National Championship winner, Mike Miller, to earn his place among the final five. In the opening game of the ABC Sports telecast, Ballard stopped Curtis Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., 205202. Ballard, Richardson, Texas, then was edged by Coffman, 213-212, with a closing four-bagger after Coffman had struck just twice earlier in the game. In the semifinal game, Coffman defeated George Branham III of Indianapolis, 202-183, to advance to the title game.
