Del Ballard Jr. avenged his embarrassment of two weeks earlier, when his gutter ball cost him a title, by claiming his sixth PBA victory in the $130,000 Leisure's Long Island Open at Sayville Bowl. Ballard, Richardson, Texas, downed leading qualifier Jim Johnson Jr., Wilmington, Del., 223-183, for the $20,000 first prize and put to rest the humiliation he'd accepted good-naturedly from his fellow pros. Johnson claimed the top-seeded position by one pin over Ballard and their championship game was close through the first five frames. Johnson then opened in his sixth and seventh frames, from which he never recovered. In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised championship round, Doug Kent of Canandaigua, N.Y., defeated reigning PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 222-216. Baltimore's Danny Wiseman then entered and tossed the first eight strikes before leaving a 10-pin, and dispatched Kent, 279-180. In the semifinal game, Ballard closed with seven strikes to nip Wiseman, 250-247, and earn his shot at redemption in the title game.
