Needing a double and seven pins to collect his sixth PBA title, Del Ballard Jr. dumped his final shot into the channel to hand Pete Weber the $150,000 Fair Lanes Open title. Both championship finalists were stunned, as were the audience members at Fair Lanes Kings Point who witnessed the 213-207 triumph for Weber's 16th PBA victory and the $30,000 first prize. The ABC Sports-televised finals began with Robert Lawrence defeating 1986 PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., Stockton, Calif., 219-217. Ballard then sidelined close friend and roommate Lawrence, Austin, Texas, 247-208. In the semifinal game, Ballard rolled past Norm Duke, Fort Worth, Texas, 257-223. Ballard earned $15,500 as runner-up, Duke received $8,500 for third place, Lawrence collected $7,000 for fourth and Williams $6,000. Williams had finished second the previous week and had qualified for the championship round on 20 occasions since last winning in 1987.
