David Ozio became just the third player in PBA history to capture the first two tournaments of the year by winning the $175,000 Showboat Invitational at Showboat Bowling Center. Ozio, Vidor, Texas, earned the $34,000 first prize for his 279-224 conquest of leading qualifier Mike Miller, Albuquerque, N.M. Ozio spared his first two frames and then unleashed 10 consecutive strikes in the title game, which was too much for Miller to overtake. Miller had tied a PBA record earlier in the week by throwing a 300 game for a third consecutive tournament. In fact, the man with the unique "no thumb" delivery style had thrown a perfect game in five of his last six tournaments bowled. But Miller couldn't muster a game to top Ozio on this day and sought his first PBA title on another occasion. In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised championship round, Mike Edwards topped Chris Warren of Dallas, 190-161. Walter Ray Williams Jr. then downed Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., 195-156. In a match-up of the previous week's AC-Delco Classic championship pairing, Ozio again bettered Williams, Stockton, Calif., 224-215. Williams remained without a PBA victory in his last 19 TV finals appearances, spanning more than three years, including 11 runnerup finishes in that time.
