Fisher's Finale A Win At Bud TPC
In his last tournament as a full-time competitor on the PBA Tour, Duane Fisher exited a winner in the $150,000 Budweiser Touring Players Championship at Taylor Lanes. Fisher, Gloucester Township, N.J., upset leading qualifier Jess Stayrook, 248-244, for the $27,000 first prize, his first PBA title and a three-year exemption into the Firestone Tournament of Champions via this "major" win. It was a bitter pill for Stayrook, San Diego, Calif., who had established PBA records for 32 and 56-game totals in assuming the top-seeded position. Stayrook bettered Mark Roth's scores set in the 1980 Showboat Invitational (Roth's 32-game total was 7,690-Stayrook posted a 7,734, and for 56 games Stayrook's 13,784 total topped Roth's former mark of 13,703). Stayrook earned $14,000 as runner-up. The championship game lived up to the high-scoring conditions the 106 PBA Touring Pros had thrived on week-long. Fisher's lone open frame came in the first, but he came back with strike, spare and seven-bagger. Stayrook opened with a strike and four spares before unleashing his own seven-bagger, but matters had been determined by then. The championship round began with Scott Devers defeating Cleveland's Dave D'Entremont, 243-234. Devers next defeated Mike Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., 266-235, to assure the new champion would be left-handed. Fisher then stepped in to stop Devers, Centerville, Ind., 266-221. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
