Warren's 1st Japan Visit A Victory
"I'd like to bowl here more often," Chris Warren said, after claiming his third PBA title of the year in the Oronamin C Japan Cup at Tokyo Port Bowl.
Warren turned back fourth-seeded Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 226-163, in this sixth annual International Invitational tournament pairing 16 leading PBA Tour players against 16 top Japanese pro bowlers. The ending seemed a fateful conclusion to Warren's first trip outside the U.S. His mother, Mary, also was making her first visit to her native country in more than 37 years.
The championship game was close through five frames, with Husted trailing by just one pin before he left back-to-back open frames in the sixth and seventh. Husted earned $12,600 as runnerup.
In the opening game of the championship round broadcast live by TV Tokyo, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Stockton, Calif., defeated Del Ballard Jr., Richardson, Texas, 228-173, before falling to Husted, 236-216. Husted then downed the lone Japanese representative in the six-man finals, Masaaki Saijyo of Tokyo, 213175.
