Amleto Monacelli remains the only champion known at Northrock Lanes in the $130,000 Wichita Open after defeating leading qualifier Walter Ray Williams Jr., 222-203. Monacelli, Venezuela, bidding to repeat as PBA Player of the Year, upset his good friend and doubles partner for his eighth PBA championship and the $20,000 first prize. Monacelli opened with five strikes while Williams, Stockton, Calif., started with a spare and four-bagger. Williams had the opportunity to take the lead in the sixth frame after Monacelli chopped the 2-8 spare, but he followed with the 7-10 split and failed to convert. In the seventh frame Williams then missed a 4-pin and Monacelli stayed clean the rest of the way to come home a winner. In the opening game of the championship round, Curtis Odom knocked out PBA Tour rookie Jay Burgess of Houston, 235-202. Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., then upended Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 233-229. In the semifinal game, Odom appeared to have Monacelli beaten, needing a mark in the 10th frame to bowl for his first PBA title, but he chopped the 2-8 spare and sat down, 185-182, much to Monacelli's surprise.
