Veteran Bob Handley overpowered Steve Hoskins, 210-200, to capture the $135,000 Columbia 300 Open and $21,000 first prize. The win was Handley's fifth PBA title and his first since winning the 1987 Greater Hartford Open. Hoskins, the 1989 PBA Rookie of the Year, entered the championship game against Handley with two match victories under his belt, including a semifinal game win over Norm Duke, Fort Worth, Texas, 221-179. Both players started with a double, spare and fourth-frame strike, and Handley led by one pin due to pin count. Hoskins missed a 4-pin in his fifth frame, giving Handley a 13-pin advantage, which he never relinquished. Handley then doubled in his sixth and seventh frames and coasted home with spares in the final three frames. The championship round began with six-time champion Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas, disposing of Bill Oakes, Dallas, 187-169. Hoskins entered the fray and finished with seven strikes on his last nine shots to defeat Williams, 216-193, which set the stage for the semifinal match.
