"I think this Is the first time I've beaten Joe [Salvemini] and it couldn't have come at a better time," Bryan Goebel said, immediately after posting his first PBA title in the $145,000 Miller Lite Challenge at Golden Pin Lanes. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., waded through four opponents and dumped leading qualifier Salvemini, 184-173, for the $24,000 first prize. Salvemini opened with a strike and Goebel started the championship game by failing to convert the 3-10 "baby split." However, Salvemini came right back with the 1-7 leave, which he missed, and then left the lefthanders' "baby split" (2-7), which he did convert. Goebel struck In the second frame, then opened In his third before doubling to take the lead. After Salvemini doubled in his eighth and ninth frames, Goebel finished to total 184. Salvemini then needed a strike and nine-count, spare, to collect his fourth PBA title. His next shot was high, relegating him to the $13,000 runner-up check. Goebel began the afternoon by topping Jimmie Pritts Jr., Methuen, Mass., 248-202. Next up was Mike Shady of Ripon, Wis., who was sidelined, 277-188. In the semifinal game, 1987 Miller Lite Challenge victor Scott Devers was shooting for his fourth PBA title, but Goebel prevailed, 222-175.
