Butch Soper woke up feeling his age, but following his victory in the $140,000 Kessler Open that afternoon, he celebrated his 41st birthday on Father's Day feeling more like a 20-year-old than a 20-year PBA Tour veteran. Soper successfully defended his leading qualifier position and warded off fourth-seeded Marc McDowell, 220-192, at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl for his fourth PBA title and a $23,000 payday. Soper credited some friendly advice from host proprietor Earl Anthony, who had captured the previous week's Showboat Senior Invitational and came within a few pins of qualifying for match play at his center. "Earl told me to pace myself mentally, and that's what I did," Soper said. McDowell looked unbeatable in working his way up the ladder. He opened the afternoon by bombing Billy Young Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla., 267-175, and then squeaked past Norm Duke, Fort Worth, Texas, 214-205, when Duke failed to mark In his 10th frame. McDowell then defeated John Mazza, Mt. Clemens, Mich., 241-210, on the strength of his strike barrage.
