Mark Baker ended a three-year wait for his fourth PBA title in the $150,000 PBA Oregon Open at Hollywood Bowl. Baker, Huntington Beach, Calif., defeated leading qualifier Steve Wunderlich, St. Louis, 255-230, for the $27,000 first prize. Runner-up Wunderlich, frustrated with his sixth second-place finish, was consoled with the $14,000 payday but commented afterward, "I bowled like a jerk and he [Baker] deserved to win." Baker opened the championship game with a double, while Wunderlich spared twice and added a four-bagger to trail by 16 pins through six frames. He then left the 2-8-10 split, failed to convert, and Baker never stopped striking until the 10th frame. By then, the outcome had been decided. Tony Westlake of Edmond, Okla., opened the championship round by topping Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo., 268-248. Westlake next took the measure of Brian Voss, Boca Raton, Fla., 269-225, before bowing to Baker in the semifinal, 236-201.
