Mike Aulby took full advantage of his first championship round appearance of 1990 by capturing his 19th PBA title in the $140,000 Greater Hartford Open. Aulby, Indianapolis, defeated leading qualifier Dave Husted, 224-193, at Bradley Bowl for the $24,000 first prize. "I owe Johnny Petraglia for this win," Aulby said of fifth-seeded PBA Hall of Famer Petraglia, who bowed to Dave Arnold, 236-205, in the opening game of the championship finals. "In practice, I was set to play inside, but saw Johnny move outside with some success and I followed." Both players opened the title game with a spare and strike, but Husted missed a 10-pin in his third frame, while Aulby tacked on a double to lead by 31 pins after four frames. Husted cut the lead slightly with his own double, then opened again in his eighth frame when he couldn't convert the 4-9 leave. Aulby stayed clean and coasted home. Enter Aulby in the third-seeded position, who survived, 196-195, in part because of a successful conversion of a third frame 3-7 split. Aulby continued to roll In the semifinal as the 1979 PBA Rookie of the Year defeated '88 PBA Rookie of the Year Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., 236-205.
