Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas, tossed three clutch strikes to snatch victory and the $38,000 first prize from leading qualifier Steve Cook, 234-233, In the $200,000 True Value Open at Landmark Recreation Center. Cook, Roseville, Calif., needed only to spare in his 10th frame to clinch his 15th PBA championship but left the difficult 3-6-10 split and failed to convert. That allowed the 27-year-old Lawrence, who had captured his first crown just five weeks earlier, an opportunity to win by striking out in his 10th frame. He did just that, sweating out his second strike before the 10-pin toppled belatedly and tacked on another strike. Cook started with a strike, then opened after leaving the 3-5-10 split, before stringing a seven-bagger. The ABC televised finals began with Norm Duke, Fort Worth, Texas, topping first-time finalist Danny Broadway of Houston, 248-238. Duke then advanced against Tony Marrese, Hilton Head Island, S.C., 220-209, before bowing to Lawrence in the semifinal, 245-207.
