Bowlers Journal Florida Space Coast Open

$140,000 BOWLERS JOURNAL FLORIDA SPACE COAST OPEN
Shore Lanes, Merritt Island, Fla., Feb 19-24, 1990

Lawrence Launched On Space Coast

The man called "Captain C" by his fellow pros, given his penchant for carrying crossover strikes, made the transition to a different "C," as In "champion." Robert Lawrence of Austin, Texas, opened with nine strikes and cruised home a 274-199 victor against Bob Learn Jr. In the $140,000 Bowlers Journal Florida Space Coast Open at Shore Lanes. Lawrence's first PBA title was worth $24,000 plus an invitation to the Firestone Tournament of Champions.

The championship outcome was clearly established by the seventh frame, with the only question being whether Lawrence would reap the $100,000 True Value Hardware Stores bonus and a new Chevrolet Corvette convertible (courtesy of AC-Delco) by becoming just the sixth person to shoot 300 in the championship round.

In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised finals, Del Ballard Jr. came from behind to overtake Bob Handley, Pompano Beach, Fla., 183-167. Handley had grabbed the fifth-seeded spot in the position round (42nd game) when Marshall Holman and Parker Bohn III tied and he vaulted from seventh place to a spot in the first game. Had either Bohn or Holman won, Handley would have been an observer.

Learn entered in the second game and disposed of Ballard, Richardson, Texas, 214-180. Learn next topped the last man to toss a televised 300 game, Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan., 202-200.
